British government department established
1782 to deal with all the internal affairs of
England except those specifically assigned to
other departments. Responsibilities include
the police, the prison service, immigration,
race relations, and broadcasting. The home
secretary, the head of the department, holds
cabinet rank. There is a separate secretary
of state for Scotland and another for Wales.
The home secretary has certain duties in
respect of the Channel Islands and the Isle
of Man.
